KAMAPLA: Police on April 1, 2026 confirmed that four juveniles were killed in a stabbing incident at Ggaba Early Childhood Development Centre in Makindye Division, Kampala, after a male suspect attacked them.
The suspect, identified as Okello Christopher Onyu, was arrested shortly after the incident, which has shocked residents and raised concerns about safety in early childhood learning centres.
According to Uganda Police, the attack occurred at the school premises in Ggaba, where the suspect reportedly entered and stabbed the children. Authorities say investigations are ongoing to establish the motive behind the killings.
“We confirm a tragic incident at the Ggaba Early Childhood Development Program school in Makindye Division where a male suspect stabbed and killed four juveniles. The suspect has been apprehended, and the motive is still under investigation,” Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala said.
Senior police officials, including the Inspector General of Police Abas Byakagaba and the Director of Operations Frank Mwesigwa, visited the scene to assess the situation and oversee initial investigations.
Police said the suspect is currently in custody as detectives continue to gather evidence and record statements from witnesses to establish what led to the attack.
The incident has sparked fear and concern among parents and residents in the area, with many questioning the safety of children in schools and daycare centres.
Some parents expressed shock at the level of violence involved in the attack, calling for stronger security measures in schools, especially those handling young children.
Authorities have urged the public to remain calm as investigations continue, while promising to provide more details as they become available.
The attack adds to growing concerns about violent crime in urban areas, particularly incidents involving vulnerable groups such as children. Security agencies say efforts are ongoing to strengthen community policing and prevent similar occurrences.
Police have reiterated their commitment to ensuring justice for the victims and their families, emphasizing that all necessary steps will be taken to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
